Should Christians blindly submit to a corrupted Government? Most churches say "Yes" based on Romans 13. But, is that really true? Romans 13: 1-3 tells us God "Ordained" Government "For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same." The Scripture clearly state that Government was created to do "Good Works", so, if the Government violates what God "Ordained" it to be, then anything that is evil and against God's law ceases to be valid. rggipson
Romans 13:1-3 reads:
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same."
Please notice... "For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil." This phrase is critically important because it reveals the context in which the Bible is speaking, i.e., appropriate government is only a terror to evil works; but not to good works. Good government is NOT a terror to good works. In other words, when a government is run amuck with crime, tyranny and injustice, we are not Biblically obligated to submit anymore. The Apostle Paul deliberately broke the law. Acts 18:13, “Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.” We ought to obey God rather than men. Thus, sometimes Christians must rebel against man in order to obey God. - gotnomoney 1/1/14 in the Daily Paul Liberty Forum
